1. Who we are
Brain Recovery Map is a platform built and operated by Ally Naylor, based in Napier, Aotearoa New Zealand. The platform provides self-reflection tools and a recovery library for people navigating concussion and traumatic brain injury.
This privacy policy applies to brainrecoverymap.com and all tools hosted on the platform, including the Concussion Recovery Tool at brainrecoverymap.com/tool.html and the Sports Brain Profile at brainrecoverymap.com/prescreen.html.
We operate in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
2. What we collect and why
When you use one of our tools
When you complete the Concussion Recovery Tool or the Sports Brain Profile, we collect and store the following:
- Your name and email address — stored securely to personalise your report and support your recovery tracking over time.
- Your tool responses — all scores across brain function areas, personality wiring, and background context are stored securely alongside your name and email.
- Context information — for the recovery tool, this includes your injury timeline and selected context factors. For the Sports Brain Profile, this includes your age bracket, sport type, and training level.
By completing a tool and ticking the consent checkbox, you agree to this information being stored as described. You can request deletion at any time by emailing hello@brainrecoverymap.com.
When you submit the contact form
If you contact us via the form on the About page, we collect your name, email address, the reason for your enquiry, and your message. This information is used only to respond to you.
3. How we use your information
Your name and email are used to personalise your report. Your responses are stored to support your recovery tracking over time and may be used in aggregate to improve the tools and inform future development.
We do not sell your data, share it with third parties, or use it for advertising. We do not track you across sessions. We do not use cookies for advertising or analytics purposes.
4. Improving the tools
Aggregate, anonymised patterns across responses are used to understand how the tools are being used and to improve them over time. This may also potentially contribute to research on concussion recovery in partnership with relevant institutions.
If you would like your data removed entirely, email hello@brainrecoverymap.com and we will delete your record.
5. Contact form
Messages submitted via the contact form on the About page are processed by Netlify Forms and delivered to our email inbox. Netlify may retain form submissions on their servers for a limited period as part of their service.
We retain contact form messages only as long as needed to respond to your enquiry. We do not add you to any mailing list as a result of contacting us.
For Netlify's privacy practices, see netlify.com/privacy.
6. Third party services
Brain Recovery Map uses the following third party services:
- Netlify — website hosting and form processing. Based in the United States.
- Supabase — database for storing tool submissions including name, email, and responses. Based in the United States, data hosted in Sydney, Australia.
- Kit (formerly ConvertKit) — email marketing platform, used to send updates to subscribers who have opted in. Based in the United States.
- Google Fonts — font delivery. No personal data is collected by us through this service.
We do not use advertising networks, social media tracking pixels, or third party analytics tools.
7. Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of any personal information we hold
- Request deletion of personal information we hold (note: anonymised scores cannot be deleted as they are not linked to your identity)
- Make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner if you believe your privacy rights have been breached
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details at the bottom of this page. We will respond within 20 working days.
8. Children and young people
The Concussion Recovery Tool is designed for adults. The Sports Brain Profile is designed for athletes of all ages, including under 18s, and includes an age bracket question so results can be interpreted with appropriate developmental context.
For athletes under 18 completing the Sports Brain Profile, we recommend a parent, guardian, or coach is aware they are doing so. A purpose-built youth recovery tool for ages 13 to 17 is in development and will be accompanied by age-appropriate consent processes when it launches.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time, for example when we add new tools, change our data practices, or add payment functionality. The date at the top of this page will always reflect when it was last updated.
Significant changes will be noted clearly. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
